The demand for nurses is very high in Manatee/Sarasota counties. At the Women’s Resource Center, we are proud to say we have helped several nurses obtain their degree through our annual scholarships.

According to an article written by the Herald-Tribune, The Department of Economic Opportunity is projecting more than 14,000 job openings for registered nurses this year. They are also projected to be the most in-demand occupation in Florida for the eighth year in a row.

By 2020, The Institute of Medicine released a report calling for 80% of the nursing workforce to have bachelor’s degrees.

Every year, WRC awards scholarships to women to pursue a higher level of education. This year, we awarded 28 women with $1,000 scholarships. Of those 28 women, 39% live in Manatee County, 64% live in Sarasota County and 50% of recipients are seeking a nursing degree.

One of our Wonder Women Clients, Christina Creadon was a Betty Schoenbaum Scholar. Christina went from barely finishing high school to becoming an RN, BSM, and actually had the chance to care for Betty while she was living her final moments.

Women like Christina are exactly why we started our annual scholarship program.
